Clear braces and tooth-colored braces are ideal for patients who want to improve the placement of their teeth in a discreet manner. Fortunately, when teeth become straighter, patients’ bites (or occlusions) can improve as well. Clear braces and ceramic braces can improve the appearance of an overbite, underbite, and even an openbite. Our orthodontist has experience with improving the health and appearance of misaligned teeth with both clear braces like Invisalign and with tooth-colored ceramic braces.
How do clear braces work?
Clear braces like the Invisalign system involve wearing a series of custom oral appliances that fit over the teeth like a retainer. These oral appliances are made from clear plastics and are tight enough to generate gentle and consistent pressure to teeth. Pressure is necessary to facilitate tooth movement. Every two weeks, patients will exchange their clear braces for a new, tighter set that is customized to accommodate previous tooth movement. Over time, teeth will become visibly straighter as spacing issues are corrected.
Invisalign is a very discreet method for adjusting the placement of teeth. It is ideal for adults who don’t want to wear conspicuous metal and wire braces. Other benefits of Invisalign include the fact that these clear braces are removable. This will allow for easy eating and oral hygiene.
What are ceramic braces?
Ceramic braces are another popular option for patients who want to straighten their smiles without conspicuous oral appliances. Unlike clear braces, ceramic braces are bonded to teeth. Brackets are made from tooth-colored ceramics so that they closely match the color of biological tooth structure. Wires and other appliances can be made from clear plastics and ceramic materials to help lend a more natural look during treatment. Like traditional orthodontia, ceramic braces rely on the creation of force and pressure to move teeth to straighter positions over time.
